Handmade Tiles 10×10 cm

This project involves creating original ceramic tiles featuring a raised ornamental design for the former Pioneer Camp «Iskra.» The composition is based on filmstrip, which symbolizes a future film school, and sparks flying from it, referencing the camp’s name. The inscription «not subject to demolition"—a reinterpretation of a found sign on the site—completes the composition, reflecting the project’s core idea: the preservation and new life of the abandoned camp.
Production Stages

1. Prototype CreationDevelopment of a relief ornament and molding of the initial tile sample from sculptural modeling clay. At this stage, the composition, texture, and depth of the relief are defined.2. Mold PreparationA mold for pouring plaster is fabricated from foam board. The modeling clay tile prototype is secured inside.3. Gypsum Mold CreationThe prepared structure is cast with gypsum plaster. After it hardens, the mold is removed from the form.4. Prototype RemovalThe modeling clay sample is removed from the gypsum mold, leaving a negative impression of the relief for ceramic tile production.5. Tile ShapingLiquid ceramic mass—slurry—is poured into the prepared mold. After shaping, the blank is removed and dried.6. Initial FiringThe dried tile undergoes a preliminary firing, gaining strength and being prepared for glazing.7. GlazingGlaze is applied to the tile surface, which emphasizes the relief and imparts color to the piece.8. Final FiringThe tile undergoes a second firing, resulting in the glaze forming a durable decorative coating.
