«THE UNSEEN» is a media outlet dedicated to the things we do every day but rarely understand how they work.
MEDIA GOAL
Contemporary individuals are surrounded by countless devices and infrastructural mechanisms that operate so seamlessly they go unnoticed. Whether we call an elevator, tap a card on a terminal, or scan a barcode at a checkout counter, the thought of the decision-making chain behind it only occasionally crosses our minds. Usually, this thought manifests as a simple question: «Who thought of this, and why, in exactly this way?»
Answers to such questions are scattered across specialized, complex texts intended for professionals. Consequently, the reader who wishes to understand the inner workings of an ordinary object must compile disparate information into a cohesive picture and relate it to their own daily practices.
The media’s goal is to make visible the concepts and patterns that define the appearance of familiar objects, and to teach the reader to notice them independently.
The project does not aim to describe the world in its entirety. Its method involves taking a familiar object or process and examining it in such detail that the reader begins to perceive this subject as the result of deliberate choices rather than as a given.
MEDIA THEMES
Segment: everyday objects, public spaces, services, and urban infrastructure that people interact with daily. The readership here is united not by a shared profession or generation, but by a predisposition to scrutinize what surrounds them and to ask themselves why it looks and functions precisely that way.Narrow focus: illustrated investigations of mundane objects, revealing their construction and inherent principles of operation.
The main project question: «What decisions were made for me even before I started using this thing?»
Any investigation begins at the moment a familiar subject ceases to be perceived as obvious.
WHAT WILL THE CONTENT LOOK LIKE
Each module is dedicated to a single subject, examining it comprehensively.
The structure of the analysis progresses as a movement from observation to reinterpretation. Initially, the reader will receive a description of the subject as they know it from their personal experience, which creates a sense of familiarity. Next, the author will explain the object’s internal workings—the principles by which it operates. Following this, the material will delve into the origin of the solution, showing which alternatives were considered previously and why they were discarded. Finally, the scope will broaden, and the reader will learn about the participants and processes that remain hidden during typical use of the object, ranging from manufacturers and regulators to service networks and logistics.
The concluding portion of the analysis brings the reader back to the original subject, offering a new perspective informed by the knowledge gained.
