As part of my thesis project, I am working on printing a bilingual edition of Goethe’s novel «The Sorrows of Young Werther,» translated by N. M. Rozhalin in 1828–1829 (German and Russian).

The tapestry concept is rooted in a painting by the German Romantic artist Moritz Daniel Oppenheim, titled «Goethe Surrounded by Illustrations of His Works,» which was created in 1835. In addition to the other works illustrated around Goethe, the novel «The Sorrows of Young Werther» is featured here.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832)—a German poet, playwright, and thinker, he is one of the central figures of European culture. The novel The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) brought him international fame and became the manifesto of the Sturm und Drang era. Its epistolary form, confessional nature, and tragedy made the book a cultural phenomenon: a wave of imitations swept across Europe, and Werther became a symbol of the Romantic hero. In Russia, «Werther» entered circulation as early as the late 18th century.
