Throughout the day, we are constantly surrounded by a flow of people we don’t pay close attention to. But sometimes our gaze catches a random detail—a familiar silhouette or the color of a jacket—which instantly reminds us of someone close to us. It’s impossible to figure out who is in front of us: in the rush, everyone is turned away, and their faces are hidden.

The child’s face is the sole exception. Sitting in his mother’s arms, he is in no rush anywhere. While adults hide their eyes, burying themselves in phones, the child openly gazes at the faces of passersby. He has not yet learned to shield himself from the world or maintain distance. In the midst of a faceless crowd focused only on moving forward, his gaze—it is the only one truly attempting to discern the individual.
