«Evgeny Evstigneev: Talent Without Excess» at the Moscow Art Theatre Museum, exhibit view, 2026
The research aims to compare two major anniversary exhibitions: «Yevgeny Yevstigneev. Talent Without Needless Words» (MHCAT Museum) and «Nikolai Akimov. To the 125th Anniversary of His Birth» (Russian Museum / Marble Palace). We will analyze the methods used by curators Marfa Nikolaevna Bubnova and Natalia Mikhailovna Kozyreva to present the scale of these theatrical leaders.
Both exhibitions focus on the legends of Soviet theater, yet they are executed in radically different ways. The project at the MKHAT Museum is an intimate exploration of an actor’s life through personal belongings and documents. The project at the Russian Museum, however, is a vast retrospective that portrays Akimov as a universal artist, equally successful working with the stage space, canvas, and book cover.

The exhibition is on display in the Green Foyer of the A. P. Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre. Its creator and curator is Marfa Nikolaevna Bubnova, the museum’s Chief Curator. The project is timed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the great actor’s birth. Marfa Bubnova chose to move beyond a dry chronicle, deciding instead to explore the very nature of Yevstigneev’s acting talent.
All images presented were created using modern digital printing techniques.

The exhibition is integrated into the operating theater foyer, which imposes spatial restrictions on the construction. The viewer is immediately immersed in a very intimate, isolated environment. The fractured geometry of the exhibition modules prevents the entire show from being grasped in a single glance.

How the Curator Explains the Exhibition
Marfa Bubnova built the introductory text around one of Evstigneev’s own phrases: «In our profession, everything must be effortless, beautiful… it must have a little bit of 'champagne' flair.» The curator immediately tells the viewer that Evstigneev’s acting gift is an unsolved mystery. The goal of the exhibition is to showcase the theatrical «backstage» and how genuinely difficult that perceived ease on stage actually was.

Media coverage, the official opening, and the individuals who inaugurated Evgeniy Evstigneev’s exhibition at the MKhAT Museum
The official opening of the exhibition «Yevgeny Yevstigneev: Talent Without Extra Words» took place in October 2026. The ceremony was a major theatrical and museum event. The main speakers and individuals who officially opened the exhibition in the Green Foyer of the A. P. Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre were Konstantin Khabenskiy, Artistic Director of the Moscow Art Theatre, and Vladimir Mashkov, Artistic Director of the Tabakov Theatre. Alexander Fokin, Director of the Moscow Art Theatre Museum, was also present as an official and key participant in the opening reception.

Spatial Logic and Visual Parallels
The exhibition is structured as a «Linear Corridor.» The curator opted for strict rectangular geometry. Information panels are mounted on lightweight metal frames, running in a straight line along both walls of the hall. The curator does not display everyday or domestic photographs of Evstigneev. He is presented only within the culture of theater. The roles are divided by voluminous «anchors”—original costumes displayed on mannequins (for example, the tunic from „The Old New Year“). Instead of long art historical essays on the walls, there are caricatures, sketches, and personal stories of colleagues. In the far corner, centered on the wall, a television plays recordings of rehearsals, bringing the static objects around it to life.

The final focus is a display featuring the original stage costume of Ivan Adamych from the performance «Old New Year.» Up until this point, throughout the entire exhibition, the viewer has mostly encountered flat digital reproductions of photographs.

A large-scale exhibition is currently on view in the halls of the Marble Palace of the Russian Museum. The project curator and author of the scholarly text is Natalia Mikhailovna Kozyreva, an expert in the Leningrad avant-garde. Her aim is to present Akimov as a universal creator who forged his own visual language for Soviet theater. The technical aspects of Akimov’s exhibits fundamentally differ from the MHATs project: here are presented the author’s original print runs, accompanied by authentic drawings.
