Project description

«Fabric of Movement» is a series of three tapestries based on microscopic images of human striated, smooth, and cardiac muscle tissue. All three tissues perform a shared function—enabling movement—but possess distinct cellular organizations that create their own characteristic rhythm and pattern. By translating microscopic structures into textiles, the project explores the connection between biological tissue and tapestry as two systems built from numerous elements unified into a cohesive whole.

concept

Human tissue and textile fabric share a common principle of construction: numerous individual elements come together to form a unified structure. In the human body, cells serve as these elements. Their shape, orientation, and organization determine the tissue’s properties and function. In a tapestry, threads perform a similar role—their interlacing creates the structure of the cloth and forms the image.

For this project, three types of muscle tissue were selected: striated, smooth, and cardiac. They share the common function of movement, but they are visually and structurally entirely different. Under the microscope, each tissue transforms into its own rhythmic pattern.

In the tapestry, this microscopic pattern is translated from a biological structure into a textile one. The cellular rhythm becomes ornamentation, and the tissue of the body forms the basis for a new, human-made fabric.

The chosen format is 204 × 146 cm.
