Selected Works by Viktoria Makovets

Book Design · Typography · Editorial Design

A selection of books, zines, and typographic experiments exploring art, censorship, memory, and the ways visual communication shapes our understanding of culture.2023–2026

I work with typography and editorial design as tools for exploring ideas, questioning established narratives, and giving form to complex subjects.

My projects range from experimental zines to book design, combining research, visual experimentation, and thoughtful composition to create printed matter that invites readers to look closer, reflect, and reconsider.

Calendar «Mensk»

post

Calendar Design · Pixel Illustration · Visual StorytellingThe Brief: Develop a calendar concept for the upcoming year, built around a cohesive visual theme and a collection of interconnected illustrations. The Problem: How can the disappearing identity of Minsk be preserved in a city undergoing rapid urbanization? As historical buildings, green spaces, and familiar elements of everyday life give way to modern developments, the city risks losing the unique character that shaped its past. The Idea: Imagine an alternative version of Minsk — a city of forgotten details, Belarusian-language cinemas, cows grazing between residential buildings, and payphones standing along nearly empty avenues. The Solution: I created a retro-inspired calendar featuring pixel illustrations that bring together fragments of the city’s past and present. The contrast between nostalgic imagery and the reality of urban transformation highlights the tension between progress and cultural memory.

Multi-page publication «Fenomen»

post

Editorial Design · Typography · Art DirectionThe Brief: Develop a multi-page publication exploring the expressive potential of typography, composition, and the relationship between text and visual content. The Problem: How can we make the emotional experience behind a work of art visible to its audience? While art allows creators to express and process their feelings, the emotions and personal experiences that shape a work often remain hidden from the viewer. The Idea: What if we could break the emotional fourth wall between the artist and the audience, looking beyond the finished artwork to explore the feelings that gave rise to it?The Solution: I developed Fenomen, an editorial project that explores the emotional dimension of art through typography and visual storytelling, creating a space for a deeper connection between the creator, their work, and the audience.

Visual research «Visual worlds of russian indie and rap artists»

post

Visual Research · Music Culture · Visual CommunicationThe Brief: Develop a visual research project connecting a chosen topic with the function of a cultural institution, such as a museum, theatre, or festival. The Problem: How distinct are the visual identities of Russian indie and rap music? Although the genres differ in sound, cultural background, and audience, their music videos may share visual techniques and storytelling approaches. These overlaps challenge conventional genre boundaries and raise questions about how musical identity is communicated through imagery. The Idea: What if Russian indie and rap music videos were viewed as parts of the same visual landscape? By comparing their imagery, aesthetics, and visual narratives, the research explores the unexpected connections between seemingly different musical worlds. The Solution: I developed a visual research project examining the visual languages of Russian indie and rap artists, identifying recurring techniques and aesthetic similarities to explore how the boundaries between the genres are becoming increasingly blurred.

Zine «Objective similarities»

post

Photography · Zine Design · Visual StorytellingThe Brief: Create a photographic series centered around a person, using observation and photography to capture their everyday life and experiences. The Problem: How can ordinary moments of everyday life be transformed into a visual story? Familiar activities may seem insignificant at first glance, yet they can reveal the spontaneity, joy, and unique character of childhood. The Idea: May Fun is a photographic observation of how my younger brother spends his time during the May holidays in the countryside — playing football, blowing soap bubbles, and jumping rope. The project captures the simple pleasures of childhood and the atmosphere of spring weekends outdoors. The Solution: Alongside the photographic series, I created Objective Similarities, a zine that brings the images together in a printed narrative, preserving the fleeting moments of everyday life through photography and editorial design.

Zine «In search of Home»

post

Zine Design · Editorial Design · Visual StorytellingThe Brief: Create an independent printed publication with a clearly defined theme, format, tone of voice, and central communication message. The Problem: How can we define the meaning of home beyond a physical place? Home is often associated with a birthplace or a familiar living space, yet its meaning can also be shaped by memories, relationships, and a sense of belonging. This makes the concept deeply personal and difficult to define universally. The Idea: What does home mean to me and to the people around me? Can a collection of different perspectives reveal a more personal and multifaceted understanding of the concept? The Solution: I created In Search of Home, an authorial zine exploring individual interpretations of home. The publication brings together personal perspectives to examine how a sense of belonging can exist in places, experiences, and connections with others.
