Проект реконструкции здания речного вокзала в г. Ульяновск
Ulyanovsk River Station

Ulyanovsk is situated on the two banks of the Volga River. Historically, the river has played a vital role in the city’s development, facilitating trade and passenger transport.
The existing river station building was opened in 1965, designed by architect Timofey Petrovich Sadovsky. It is located on the right bank of the Volga and is part of the river port.

The River Station was not just a point for boarding and disembarking passengers. It housed ticket counters, waiting areas, a restaurant, a buffet, and a barbershop. The station serviced both passenger and cruise ships and served as one of the first introductions to Ulyanovsk for those arriving via the Volga River.

Why does the train station need reconstruction?
The reduction in river transport has changed the role of the station. Some of its original functions have become irrelevant, and the building and surrounding area require renewal. At the same time, river tourism continues to develop, and the station can become a public space demanded not only during the navigation season.
City and River: A Lost Connection
The River Station is located on the Volga, but it is not sufficiently connected to the urban environment. The path from the pier to the main city routes requires clearer navigation and more convenient pedestrian infrastructure.
Project brief: transform a train station from a mere transit point into a memorable location for arrivals and city exploration.

Mosaic in Modern Interpretation
The project proposes using monumental mosaic—a characteristic element of Soviet architecture widely found in various cities across the country.
I want to reinterpret this tradition in a contemporary execution, utilizing imagery of the Volga River, fish, and river transport. The mosaic panels could become an integrated part of the interiors and public spaces of a river station.

ArtWorker workshop is being considered as a potential contractor, with experience in creating monumental mosaics and production within the Ulyanovsk region.Local artists can also be engaged in the design phase to create unique compositions related to the history and identity of the city.
