Media Goal
UNBEING: This media project explores the phenomenon of nostalgia for eras that contemporary people never personally experienced—things they never lived through.Main Area of Investigation: We collect visual and cultural artifacts from the past—photos, objects, music, advertising, interfaces, fashion, and film—and examine why they evoke a sense of familiar history in people who don’t actually remember it.Objective: To demonstrate how the image of the past is formed and why we may yearn not for our own memories, but for a cultural construct of an era.
Project Goals
— Investigating the phenomenon of «alien nostalgia"—why we feel an emotional connection to eras we never experienced. — Curating and preserving cultural artifacts—photographs, objects, advertisements, music, interfaces, fashion, and visual imagery. — Deconstructing the image of the past, separating the authentic characteristics of an era from its contemporary romanticization. — Illustrating the connection between past and present—how older visual techniques resurface in fashion, design, music, and the internet. — Fostering a more conscious engagement with visual culture among our audience by providing the context behind familiar imagery. — Developing a collective archive where subscribers can share their own discoveries, photographs, and stories.
Project Values
For the audience:
The project helps users understand their own sense of nostalgia and see where familiar images from the past originate. Rather than simply curating retro content, subscribers receive context, history, and the opportunity to compare their perception with the experiences of others. For the visually engaged audience:
The media becomes a source of meaningful visual references: one can do more than just save a beautiful photograph; one can learn why it looks the way it does and what cultural era it reflects. For the project as a whole:
It creates a living digital archive that documents not only real historical artifacts but also how the new generation represents and reinterprets that past.
Future Media Themes

Competitors and Their Analysis
Competition CriteriaWe evaluate competitors based on 6 criteria:
1. Platforms — where content is published.
2. Content Format — posts, videos, collections, research.
3. Visual Style — photography, archives, graphics, motion.
4. Tone of Voice — expert, nostalgic, entertaining, etc.
5. Audience Engagement — comments, polls, interactives, user-generated content.
6. Content Uniqueness — what specifically distinguishes the project from others.
Direct Competitors
These are projects that directly engage with archives, nostalgia, and past culture.
Indirect Competitors
They may not specifically leverage nostalgia, but they compete for the same audience attention.
Potential Competitors
These are projects that may not directly occupy our niche right now, but possess the capacity to attract the same audience.
• Media on design; • Media on contemporary culture; • Telegram channels about photography; • Channels about fashion and Y2K; • VK archive communities; • New projects about digital nostalgia.
Key takeaway from the competitive analysis
There are currently many projects that explore the past and many projects that speak to modern retro trends.
The Free Territory exists between them:
it isn’t about «what was before?» nor is it about «why is Y2K trendy now?» instead, it asks, «why does the contemporary person miss something they never even experienced?»
Our media occupies exactly this territory.
Distribution Channel
Telegram — primary platform
Telegram was chosen as the main channel because it allows us to combine visual content, short research, and interaction with the audience.
Core Tools:Posts — the primary format for research.
Polls — we gauge the audience’s personal connection to the past. «Which era would you like to live in?»
Reactions — a quick way to gauge emotional response.
Comments — discussion of personal memories and associations.
User Content — subscribers submit their photographs and objects.
Collections — thematic groupings of images.

Thus, the channel becomes not just a medium, but a collective archive of nostalgia.
