Data and Source
For this project, the Registry of National Film Certificates, published on the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation Open Data Portal (opendata.mkrf.ru), was chosen.
The data is presented in CSV format and contains detailed information about films that have received official «national» status, including certificate issuance dates, studio names, and project categories.
About the data
Analyzing the dataset allows us to look into the trends of the Russian film industry and understand how the state shapes the cultural landscape in cinema. Here, you can see how the number of films produced has changed over the years.
It is also possible to view the ratio of feature films, animated films, and documentaries, and to identify the most active production studios.
On Visualization
Seven different visualization types were used to fully present the data from the National Film Register.
Line Chart (Category Trends) — allows tracking the change in the volume of certificate issuances from 1990 to 2024.
Radar Chart (Seasonality Analysis) — was applied to assess the «density» of monthly registrations.
Bar Charts (Productivity Rankings) — were used to identify market leaders.
Treemap — visualizes the structure of film production through the scale of influence of specific studios.
Word Cloud (Semantic Analysis) — allows visualization of the «cultural code» of Russian cinema through the most frequent concepts in titles.
Schedules
Data analysis from 1998–2024 confirms the steady growth of Russian film production, which reached an historical peak in 2023, indicating an expansion of industry capacity and the effectiveness of state support mechanisms.
Period comparisons show the stable dominance of art and documentary cinema alongside a noticeable increase in the share of animated projects within the total volume of national film production.
The ranking of the most active filmmakers identifies key creators of national content, whose consistently high rate of production forms a significant part of the modern state film registry.
