[concept]

The concept behind the ring is based on the principle of one of the first so-called «optical toys»: the taumatrope. This principle involves creating an optical illusion of motion when the disk, which features the same image on both sides with a slight distortion—movement—is spun quickly.

This ring is one of the vessels for media exploring the practices of viewing and the art history concept of the «View,» which I am developing as my thesis project. The metaphor of the visual system of media encompasses early optical devices. The ring takes the form of a square frame enclosing a circular disc. On either side, there is an image of a horse in two phases of movement, taken from a 19th-century chronophotography. Therefore, when this disc rotates on the axis inside the ring, it offers a simple simulation of a moving horse.

The ring is handcrafted from 925 sterling silver: according to calculations, it will require approximately 30 grams per ring.
[Production]
- Casing Fabrication
- Hole Preparation
- Disc Manufacturing
The ring shank and upper frame can be produced using casting based on a 3D model. After casting, the casting is cleaned and undergoes preliminary sanding.
Two coaxial holes are drilled into the side walls of the frame for mounting the axis of the rotating disc.
The disc is cut separately from sheet silver, after which a through-hole is made in its center to allow for free rotation on the axis.
The deep silhouette of the horse is formed on both sides of the disc using CNC milling or a specialized stamp. The indentations are then locally blackened, and the surface is matte-finished and partially polished to create contrast.
The disc is mounted inside the frame on a metal axle that is secured against lateral movement without restricting rotation—for instance, by soldering the axle insertion points into the ring collar.
The body is sanded and selectively polished, preserving the matte texture and the characteristic signs of hand-finishing without bringing the surface to a mirror shine.
