Creating a clothing collection about the private and intimate, embedded within the public space, based on research into the manifestations of the public and private in everyday life and wardrobes in 20th-century Russia.
About the Project
The project focuses on an in-depth investigation of the boundary between the public and the private, drawing from a retrospective of 20th-century Russia. It reflects on the public sphere as a space governed by social acceptability, norms of propriety, and societal interaction, including the degree of importance placed on the collective good across various types of public space. It also examines how the intimate and private find expression in people’s daily lives—defining their identity and vulnerability—yet are often excessively exposed to society, thereby breaching boundaries and entering the public domain.
The central subject of the study is the Soviet era as a unique case study of collectivism and the state-promoted emphasis on the public. The research will explore the historical and social context, prerequisites, and consequences of the regime. It will seek out manifestations of the personal and private under strict ideology, including the evolution of perceptions regarding undergarments and the body itself.
Another vital aspect of the project is corporeality as a key factor of intimacy—the human body as one’s private, inviolable property. The project will explore the concept of nudity and the perception of the body.
Relevance
In the contemporary era, the boundary between the public and the private is taking on a new form due to the development of the Internet and social media. The phenomenon of blogging and information saturation affect society by emphasizing the cult of personality, individual success, and unique traits, often leaving no space for the authentic or intimate. Many people strive to stand out from the crowd, to be authentic, and to differentiate themselves from society. Furthermore, questions regarding truthfulness and «fake-ness,» propriety, and personal boundaries are becoming more relevant.

Concept
The core concept of the project involves shifting focus to the private and intimate—the body and the underlayers of clothing. The boundary between the private and the public blurs, with the interior being displayed for public view. It explores the paradox between the respectable, the publicly acceptable, and the liberated, the internal self.
Manifesto and Formula
The collection is built at the intersection of the public and the private. It reinterprets the form of the schoolgirl’s uniform—an archetype of public behavior, social conduct, and good manners. The enclosed body, modest embellishments, and simple silhouette are juxtaposed with transparency that reveals the body, the development of texture that unveils the intimate interior, including the undergarment construction. This becomes the collection’s key device, shifting the focus to the private sphere and revealing its beauty and vulnerability. The triad of «dress—undergarment—body» is examined and inverted. Corporeality becomes the topmost and most visible layer—a meditation on the reinterpretation of human skin. The outer layer allows glimpses of the undergarments and the clothing hidden beneath.
Target Audience
The target audience for this project is young adults aged 18–30 who are interested in avant-garde fashion, contemporary art, and individual self-expression. This includes fans of conceptual fashion and representatives of creative industries. It is suitable for editorial shoots, performances, music videos, and artistic projects. The project explores themes of vulnerability and corporeality. The commercial potential of the project can be realized by adapting the creative techniques for everyday life and production.
