ART RESEARCH
INDIVIDUAL HOME
Author: Steven Holl
Location: Catskill, New York, USA
Year: 1997–1999
Function: Retreat (a rural residence for leisure and art collection).
Key Artistic Features:
· Sculpturality: The house is perceived as a volumetric sculpture atop the hill, rather than simply a utilitarian structure.
· Kinetics of Light: Holl is known for his «luminist» approach—light is treated as a material. The fractured form allows the sun to «cut through» the house and move through the interior throughout the day.
· Painterliness: The interior walls are designed like a «museum"—offering maximum surface area for displaying a modern art collection, while the windows function as frames enclosing the landscape.
· The house form originated from a watercolor sketch Hall made right on the hilltop.
· The house resembles a discovered split stick—a «primitive sign» on a massive 33-acre lot.Tectonics and Materials. · Structure: A steel frame painted the color of iron oxide (a rich red).
· Facade: Cedar cladding, stained red.
· Interior: White walls for hanging artwork, ash floors (initially; later repainted black).
· Roof: Metal, the same red color, with rainwater directed to a cistern north of the house.Context.
· South Balconies as Passive Solar Elements: The deep balconies face almost due south. In winter, the low sun penetrates deep into the interiors; in summer, the high sun is blocked by the overhang, creating shade.
· Windows as Frames: The openings are irregular, piercing the walls in strategic locations to transform the landscape into «paintings» on the walls.
· Light at the Heart of the Home: The break between the wings allows sunlight to stream directly into the central core, creating a dynamic interplay of shadows and light throughout the day.
