Interior Design: Fundamental Design Technologies
Basic Mini-Course in AutoCAD, Photoshop, and SketchUp—a crash course for beginners in creating blueprints, 3D models, and graphically presenting projects from scratch.
What is this course about?
Interior design is a highly sought-after profession, relevant even during periods of economic downturn. Today, there is much discussion about artificial intelligence (AI) replacing designers. However, neural networks are still unable to accomplish two key tasks: creating accurate technical drawings and rapidly assembling conceptual 3D models. This course is designed for anyone who wishes to master interior design from scratch. Throughout the program, you will learn to work with three core applications: AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Photoshop. We will focus exclusively on the basic tools that are necessary and sufficient for creating an independent design project without prior professional training. The final outcome of the course will be a portfolio of blueprints, two mood boards, and a 3D collage of a future apartment.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for:— Those looking to master a new, in-demand profession, work remotely, and build a flexible schedule.— Individuals interested in renovation who prefer to manage the work themselves to create functional interiors, save on designer fees, and avoid costly mistakes.— Students in the Interior Design program who need a fast, practical start in industry-standard software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop) and a finished project for their portfolio.
Course Duration: 8 weeks.
Total Contact Hours: 16 academic hours.
Classes are held online.
Course Prerequisites.Basic computer literacy skills. It is advisable to have additional competencies, or to be ready to acquire them concurrently with the course: access to a personal computer or laptop for software installation, a strong desire to learn, and a readiness to assimilate a large volume of information during the course.
What will students learn in this course, and what practical assignments will they complete?
During this course, students will learn to:— Draft technically accurate plans and layouts in AutoCAD using basic functionality
Assignment: Create an accurate measured plan of a room based on given dimensions— Construct two-dimensional drawings and schematics for design documentation
Assignment: Develop a layout solution including furniture placement according to ergonomic principles— Visualize interior concepts in Photoshop by creating striking collages and mood boards
Assignment: Compile a conceptual mood board (collage) based on style, color, and materials— Model volumetric three-dimensional spaces and objects in SketchUp
Assignments: 1) Construct a three-dimensional «box» of walls and partitions based on an AutoCAD drawing
2) Integrate ready-made 3D models of furniture and equipment into the created space
3) Set up viewpoints, lighting, and basic materials for volume demonstration— Integrate data from AutoCAD, Photoshop, and SketchUp into a single, continuous workflow.
Assignment: A comprehensive design project portfolio for one room (or studio apartment), from concept to technical realization
Thematic Lesson Plan
1) Introduction to AutoCAD Interface and Logic— Studying the basic logic of the program, setting up the workspace, and mastering fundamental drawing and editing tools.Outcome (Assignment): A drawing of simple flat geometric contours with precise dimensioning.2) Creating the Accurate Foundation (As-Built Plan)— Translating real room measurements into a digital format. Creating the master plan upon which the entire project will be built.— Outcome (Assignment): A finished, clean As-Built Plan of the room, including all structural elements.3) Ergonomics and Layout Design in AutoCAD— Working with furniture blocks and placing dimensions for contractors.— Outcome (Assignment): A floor plan showing furniture and equipment arrangement with key dimensions.4) Fundamentals of 3D Modeling in SketchUp— Importing the drawing from AutoCAD into SketchUp and erecting volumetric walls.— Outcome (Assignment): A finished three-dimensional «shell» of the room with accurate ceiling and opening heights.5) Populating and Detailing the 3D Space— Working with volume and furniture within 3D. Finding existing models, customizing them, and integrating them into the project.— Outcome (Assignment): A fully furnished 3D interior model6) Composition and Concept Work in Photoshop— Exporting graphics from SketchUp and moving to Photoshop. Creating the conceptual foundation of the project—a mood board (a collage of atmosphere).— Outcome (Assignment): Exported linear interior views + Conceptual mood board in Photoshop.7) Collage Visualization of the Interior— Creating a «living» presentation without complex rendering.— Outcome (Assignment): The final artistic collage visualization of the interior.8) Assembling the Design Project and Final Defense— Finalizing all course materials. Uniting drawings, schematics, and visualizations into one neat, concise PDF portfolio.— Outcome (Assignment): The completed Comprehensive Design Project Portfolio (PDF) and its presentation to the instructor/group (Final Assessment Component).
