What Nothing Can Sound Like

Ivan Yelyutin’s Study ProjectWhat might «Nothing» sound like? An exploration of brand character and the search for an electronic palette for a short audio logo and musical intros. The transparent structure, expressive details, and playful interaction elements serve as the starting point for the sound system. In this project, they are translated into compositional principles: a minimal set of elements, discernible timbres, and an unexpected accent.

Nothing creates smartphones, audio devices, and software products. In its research, the brand is examined through the desire to restore expressiveness and pleasure to technology: the device becomes a part of the user’s identity, and interaction with the hardware becomes a source of curiosity.

The project’s objective is to propose a sonic language that continues this character. The short mark must be expressive and concise, while longer formats must develop the same intonation while leaving room for nuance.

Character: courage, precision, and play

In the Nothing research, the brand is described as bold, independent, and playful. Its sonic identity should evoke curiosity, pleasant surprise, and inspiration. This is an original interpretation—a guideline for development that still needs testing in audio sketches. Boldness implies a distinct cadence and a noticeable timbre. Independence means rejecting pre-made advertising formulas. Playfulness can manifest as a subtle rhythmic shift or an unexpected detail: the sound remains precise but avoids becoming predictable.

Sound Concept

The starting point is transparency and attention to the subject’s structure. In sound, this can be conveyed through clear composition: every element is audible distinctly and has its own function. The pause is as important here as the note—it helps differentiate short impulses and tonal nuances.

The proposed principle is a short electronic motif featuring one characteristic detail. A clean foundation sets the precision, dry percussion gathers the movement, and a metallic or slightly gritty accent adds individuality. This is a direction of inquiry; the specific melody, intervals, and processing will be chosen after comparing the initial sketches.

Palette and Movement

The foundation consists of pure electronic tones with a bright, resonant timbre. The rhythm is characterized by dry clicks, short synthesizer hits, and shimmering percussion. Details incorporate metallic and subtly rough textures that emerge against a transparent sonic fabric.

Minimalist electronics establish a small number of distinct parts. An aerospace aesthetic suggests associations with material science and engineering. The 90s rave culture serves as a reference point for dance energy and recurring motifs.

For the developed musical theme in this study, a working range of 120–130 BPM was selected. Repetition sustains momentum, while unexpected accents introduce playfulness. For the short audio logo, the integrity of the gesture and clear resolution are more important; the theme’s tempo should not mechanically dictate its form.

Musical References

Daft Punk — Derezzed
The short, repetitive synthesizer motif is interesting here: a small phrase sustains the energy and becomes the centerpiece of the composition. For Nothing, this principle could be applied to an original motif on a single, expressive timbre. The distortion level should be reduced so that the parts remain discernible.

Com Truise — Propagation
The rounded synthesizer tones and the movement of the sound’s coloration serve as the guide here. This softness could form the basis of a calmer jingle: the short motif is retained, and the sense of space emerges through changes in timbre.

Both pieces are used as analytical references. The principles of working with repetition and timbre are drawn from them; the melodies and recordings are not material for the future audio logo.

The Boundaries of Sound

Excessive pathos will overstate the scope of a small gesture. Energy is permissible, but the sound should not every time represent a grandiose technological breakthrough.

Pre-packaged advertising formulas will weaken the sense of originality. Simultaneously, restraint must not devolve into a faceless background—even in a minimal composition, there must be a recognizable detail.

Playfulness is important, but in moderation. Deliberately cartoonish effects can make the image seem unserious. The goal is to preserve curiosity and pleasant surprise within a precise, cohesive form.

From a brief mark to a system

The next stage is to compare sound options and select a core motif. The planned system begins with a minimal audio logo lasting about three seconds. An expanded version of six to eight seconds will allow for the development of the same gesture and a more detailed exploration of the timbre.

If necessary, the system will be supplemented by two jingles: one more rhythmic and one softer. They will share the same motif and color palette, but will differ in density, movement, and spatial character. The composition of the system and its sound are still subject to decision.

Application Scenarios

A short audio logo—used at the conclusion of a product video, followed by the appearance of the Nothing name. The main emphasis must align with the visual closing, and the sound’s decay should leave a sense of a complete gesture.

The expanded version—suitable for an opening title sequence or a short device presentation. The additional time will allow for linking the emergence of the object’s details with the development of its timbre while preserving the overall intonation.

Jingles—potential accompaniment for short content: a rhythmic version for dynamic editing, and a softer version for a calm showcase of materials and details. These are proposed learning scenarios. Demonstrations with the final sound will be added after a direction has been selected.

Project Basis

Creator — Ivan Yelyutin. Independent academic project: an exploration and proposal for the sound direction of Nothing.

Research foundation — the author’s PDF, «Nothing. Brand Sound Image.» Brand materials: Nothing / About. Musical references: Daft Punk — Derezzed; Com Truise — Propagation.

At this stage, the principles for the future identity have been formulated. The audio logo, jingles, and demonstrations of application still need to be developed and approved.
