The project focuses on the traditions of family weaving—a part of the cultural heritage of the Russian Old Believers families from Transbaikalia. Central to the work is manual labor, the transmission of craft knowledge, and the role of women in preserving folk traditions.
The tapestry’s image is constructed around the theme of intertwined threads, where individual elements form a unified whole. The thread symbolizes the connection between generations, and the fabric is the result of meticulous labor, patience, and skill.
The title «Golden Threads» references both the color palette of the work and the value of the traditions that continue to exist thanks to the people who preserve and pass them down. The color palette is based on shades of ochre, gold, burgundy, and blue. Their combination conveys the character of traditional textiles and creates a distinct contrast between warm and cool colors.
The composition unites figural elements with rhythmic lines that suggest the movement of the threads and the structure of the woven cloth. The material’s texture plays a vital role: the interweaving of fibers, the surface irregularities, and the loose ends of the threads underscore the handmade nature of the work.
The project’s goal is to reinterpret the traditions of family weaving through the medium of contemporary decorative and applied arts, while maintaining a connection to the historical and cultural context.
«Golden Threads» embodies a tradition that is built from countless individual actions and sustained by human labor. Through material, color, and composition, the project approaches craftsmanship as a form of cultural memory.
