Jean-Luc Lagarce’s Just the End of the World is the story of Louis, who returns home after a long absence to tell his family about his imminent death. However, the reunion devolves into a series of tense conversations, lingering resentments, and unexpressed feelings. Through the family’s relationships, the play explores themes of alienation, loneliness, and the impossibility of truly hearing one another. The core of the play lies in monologue, though interspersed with scenes of extended dialogue. The protagonist’s inability to communicate his thoughts stalls the narrative, pulling the other characters into a relentless stream of words.
