Andrey Knyazev (1932–2003)—a Soviet photographer and photojournalist for publications such as «Soviet Culture, ” „Smena, ” „Soviet Screen, ” and „Independent Newspaper.“ He is considered part of the official Soviet photographic tradition. A significant portion of his work focuses on photographing Soviet and international celebrities, ranging from young Andrei Tarkovsky and Inna Churikova to Francis Ford Coppola and Sophia Loren. Another notable theme is the depiction of Soviet women in their daily lives. He is also known for photojournalism from other countries.
A distinctive aspect of Knyazev’s work is his pursuit of replicating the technical techniques of a cinematographer. For him, the benchmark for visual expression was Impressionism, and he succeeded in conveying a unique sense of lightness and transparency through photography.
Knyazev’s photographic archive is housed at the Lumier Brothers Photography Center.
