a new perspective on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale

Original size 1920x1010

Original size 1920x1010

Brief
Creating a cohesive system of whimsical and positive illustrations that will bring a cheerful, light mood to a classic fairy tale for young readers, while perfectly adapting the artistic design to the client’s strict book layout.Idea
I wanted to present the fairy tale in a new interpretation by posing the question: «What if…?» What if the story of the cat in a world where everyone, except for him and his owner, has boots? The main character does everything he can to improve their situation. Of course, his intelligence and quick wit help him in this!1/4

Solution
First, I shaped the main idea and the look and feel of the project. I chose less ordinary methods and made the characters’ poses and movements more dramatic than usual. I also focused closely on shapes and on the empty space around them.Result
This is a complete set of illustrations that follows the story from its opening through the high point to the final outcome. The work shows my ability to work with classic literary material and to create characters with vivid, expressive design.1/4

illustrated jester headscarf
Brief
My brief was to design a series of square illustrations for scarves. The designs had to work when the scarf is worn in different ways, and I also had to stay within a limited colour palette.Idea
I wanted to use some pliable, shapeable objects in my illustrations. I also wanted to work with the body. After thinking about it for a long time, I came to the theme of the jester and mischief. In the world of little jesters, there is only one big job: mischief! That’s all they do — they play tricks, fool around, pull faces at each other, and tumble about. That’s their most important work! And they also let me know that you can join them — but shh! It’s a secret. This series of scarves is for serious people who have a bit of mischief and fun hidden inside.Original size 1920x1010
Original size 1920x1010
Solution
Given the limits of the material, I chose a colour palette. I made jesters the main theme of the scarves. I worked in different ways with visual weight, empty areas, and very busy areas, so that when the scarf is folded and worn in different ways, the piece doesn’t become simpler or less interesting. For this task, the wimmelbook style of illustration was a perfect fit.Result
In the end, I ended up with three strong scarves. They look great as a set, and more importantly, they sit nicely when worn, can be folded in different ways, and really draw the eye. The wimmelbook-style details make them fun to look at closely. This project shows my range of skills: my ability to work with black-and-white illustration and with the wimmelbook style. It also highlights my skill in designing illustrations for a specific physical format.Original size 1920x1010

Bim, Boom, Bam, Bom!
*illustrated calendar
a series of fresh illustrations

Brief
My task was to create a series of illustrations for a calendar, taking the printing requirements into account.Idea
I continued the theme of the jolly jester. I liked how well these characters look in the series of paintings. This time, I wanted to add more story and plot and draw the viewer’s attention to a few memorable characters. And again, I started with the question «what if?». the question. What if the circus leaves and the buffoons stay? And what will Bim, Bam, Boom and Bom do on their strange holiday? Joking? Fooling around? Playing pranks? Well, let’s see how they handle it.Original size 1920x1010

Solution
I started by working on the main characters. Each of them got a recognisable shape and personality. Even though they are all very different, mischief is what brings them together. That’s why they get up to tricks in every illustration. Since these are pictures for a calendar, I added a small hint of the month to which the illustration refers on each page. I chose a complex, limited colour palette and experimented with the style.Result
In the end, I created a bright series of 13 illustrations (12 months plus the calendar cover) and charming characters that were very easy to use on merchandise. This project clearly shows my ability to work with form, my subtle humour in illustrations, and my skill at handling large shapes and masses.

street ideas for Nizhny Novgorod

Brief
Brief was to design big illustrations for streets and public spaces in Nizhny Novgorod, drawing inspiration from traditional Russian Khokhloma patterns.Idea
I thought: what if I moved the jesters into a Russian setting and turned them into skomorokhs? That’s how this story came about: Things are uneasy in Nizhny Novgorod… The spoons have run off, the patterns have gone missing, and the locals and tourists are bored… So what now? Don’t worry! Three tireless skomorokhs are rushing to help. Meet Kho, Khlo, and little Ma. They know exactly how to handle this situation.Original size 1920x1010
