In the «Rucheynik» project, I equate myself and humanity as a whole with an aquatic insect whose larva builds a protective shelter from surrounding elements, whether those are sand grains, mollusk shells, or decaying plant matter.
Modern humans live under the threat of technological and natural disasters, wars, and epidemics. Civilization could reach the brink of extinction at any moment. Typically, the impending threat does not align with the masses’ tendency to ignore it. Much like a vulnerable larva shielding itself from an aggressive external environment, human beings construct their camouflage casing from daily rituals: waking up to an alarm, brushing teeth, taking a pill, applying lotion, checking social media, getting ready for work. The protective layers of this shelter consist of mass-produced items: tubes, pills, gadgets, and so on. Every casing is both unique and universal simultaneously.
Just as habits in a state of anxiety take on a hypertrophied scale, the evidence of our daily lives transforms, in my project, into museum artifacts. «Rucheynik» is composed of two blocks of work—sculpture and relief silk-screen printing.
