The interior design project was developed for a married couple with two children living in a spacious apartment in the center of St. Petersburg.
He specializes in the conceptual design of maritime ports, has worked in various countries, and has traveled extensively across Russia. She is a graduate of a technical university who decided to pursue creative endeavors; she is interested in music, painting, and architecture, and loves flowers. Both share an affinity for northern nature, are easygoing, and want to infuse their inner sense of love, warmth, and freedom into their home’s interior design.
Project clients—who are from Saint Petersburg—love their city, but are always ready to leave and fill their lives with new color.
The project author suggested incorporating a Scandinavian style into the interior design.
Towards the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, Scandinavian (primarily Finnish) National Romanticism heavily influenced the architecture of St. Petersburg, forming the basis of Nordic Modernism. Architects of that era incorporated motifs of northern nature, folklore, and mythology into their decorative designs.
The long, often overcast St. Petersburg winters and the lack of sunlight have historically made the bright Scandinavian style particularly sought after in interior design. White walls and ceilings, natural materials (wood, linen, cotton), and an abundance of natural light visually expand the space and compensate for the sun’s deficit.
In St. Petersburg interiors, Scandinavian style is often infused with local character—the philosophy of hygge (a Danish concept of coziness and well-being). Unlike the stricter Scandinavian canon, the St. Petersburg interpretation allows for a touch of casualness: varied plants, vintage details, and eclectic textiles.
