This illustration series was prepared for a major VTB long-read and the publication «Rules of Life,» within which Russian experts from the worlds of technology, cinema, and science discuss the role of artificial intelligence in our present and future.

Project Goal

This long-form piece combines two series of interviews that explore diverse perspectives on technology and the future. Examples include: «How is artificial intelligence influencing education?» or «Should robots resemble humans?»Each illustration must convey the essence of the discussion using ironic and futuristic imagery, incorporating elements of technology and the future, all while adhering to VTB’s brand book. It was important to maintain the series' friendly tone and to depict technology primarily as a human ally, rather than a replacement.

Refined sketch for the cover, pending style approval

For the project presentation on the website, we prepared a cover in advance that would establish a potential stylistic direction. We drew inspiration from multi-format European illustration: by integrating numerous, sometimes disparate, elements, we achieved the desired direction—one where technology synthesizes with humanity rather than opposes it, demonstrating the diversity of its influence on our spheres of life.

Approved sketches for project illustrations

While creating the artwork, active work was conducted to rework the text and extract imagery that would help explore the thematic complexities.

The main difficulty students face when reinterpreting themes of technology and AI is literalism—therefore, when searching for imagery, it was crucial to consider not only the clarity of presentation but also the associations and metaphors.

For instance, distrust of AI technologies can be conveyed through the image of a scanner linked to security screening, while delegating simple tasks to an AI assistant can be shown through the control of a toy excavator.

The financial sphere suggests a restrained visual language; however, in this project, we managed to strike a balance between informative content and humor.Small details—such as the reflection of a robot vacuum in a large robot or a trio pointing at each other—add irony and reference well-known internet memes.

Some images resonate on their own—for instance, the evolution from embryo to computer, or a person in foil defending themselves from robots with a keyboard. These details draw the viewer’s attention and connect the illustrations to a relevant cultural context.

When working with a large volume of images, it is also crucial to maintain a sense of freshness: every robot, computer, or person must possess the same stylistic tone but differ in their visual presentation. This is a complex yet vital stage that sustains diversity within the project through the manipulation of form and texture.

The final part of the interview focuses on the practical application of robotics and the role of humanity in this new technological era. Here, the emphasis shifts from abstract concepts to specific narratives. The more restrained presentation becomes a harmonious complement to the dynamic illustrations of the previous parts.
