I want to be better in New Year’s. Not in a comparative sense: better than… just better. Smarter, kinder, cleaner, «easier, easier, higher, more fun,» as wise Stanislawski has promised us all. Can the theater help? The answer is not as clear as it seems. On the one hand, the theatre is a department of good and education, and on the other, there’s something mixed, seductive about it. Because the right theater doesn’t answer, it only asks questions. Sometimes they’re wicked. That’s the beauty of it!

As author of the writing column, I want to share with you performances that have made me a little better. At least they asked an interesting question, which is interesting to find an answer to, not all of the performances on this list are premieres. But the premiere is, you came to the show the first time, so here’s the premiere. Good performances last a long time. Speaking of good. One of the most mysterious human talents is charm. What is it, it’s really unknown. But it works on everyone, and it’s unforgivable. Eugenia Pisarev’s performance at the Pushkin Theater «Bad Good» by Oscar Wilde «Veer Lady Windermere» explores this phenomenon. Scared writer Oscar Wilde. There’s no way to pronounce his charming and funny lines so they don’t look like social media status. It’s hard to keep these goldfish alive. Screaming out of the play’s «acquarium» text, they fall asleep immediately. The spicy tails and the fins of the phrases are hanging hopelessly, and the mouth is crying out, and I want to scream, citizen artists, put it back in the book, don’t torture your bellies! But Patrick’s first phrase in «Bad Good» is that anyone who hasn’t turned his phone off will go to hell and bring joy to the heart! This frazz fish (not Wyld, all right) was trembling and feeling like a fish in the water. Followed by the first one and the others sailed. Patrick, who is played by Mark Condratiev, is the soul of this play, and he is incredibly charming in this role. Another type of charm, already female, represents Lady Erwin’s audience in the performance of Victoria Isakova. But the main and most charming hero of this story, as stated on the stage by a huge portrait of a writer, is Oscar Wilde. Wilde could quite have said, «Lady Erwin is me.» The fateful secret, like the bitter folding of lips, will be related to the dangerous and beautiful Lady Erwin with the writer. These people know exactly how their heart breaks and how to break someone else’s. The words «sick» and «silly» in their mouths are almost synonymous. But they’re charming. These are bad good ones. The charm of a person acts on people like a balm on a wound, like a patch on a cut. Spectacular is a little sigh, maybe a little exhale. Take a break. You can learn.

Petersburg — Petrograd — Leningrad, Theater of Music and Poetry, p. Photo from the theater website.
Speaking of time. You can’t tell an era, music and beauty. You have to feel it. The theater, as a sense, is indispensable and unique. It’s no big deal to know that Ivan Popowski’s play at the Cambourova Theater, Petersburg, Leningrad, is dedicated to the history of the same name city. But what you’re gonna see is gonna be very unexpected. Surprise is the most beautiful emotion in the theater. The river of love that flows through the auditorium at some point begins to flow through your heart, taking away all that is not necessary. Leaving the most important. That’s what makes a man human. The unbelievable beauty of the play. It’s got words in it. It consists of songs, voices, artists, music in Oleg Sinkin’s graceful arena. Tragedy does not kill a soul, but rises it. The Greeks understood that correctly. But they used to laugh! The ancient Greek theater knew only two masks — crying and laughing.

Speaking of ancient Greek. Oleg of Lipovec’s Lisstrata at Shalom Theatre is very ancient Greek. I think if Aristofan had been resurrected, he would have. There aren’t many plays in Moscow that make you laugh to tears and hiccups. At Shalom, the play «Lisstrata» was self-inflicted. Easy, fun and tasteful. I feel like that’s what it was like in ancient Greece. Only the modern version is more decent, of course. The story of Aristofana’s ancient comedy is wonderful. Women agreed to deny their men proximity until they agreed to peace. Now it’s classic: denial, anger, trading, depression, acceptance. They say laughter prolongs life, and laughter brings together. Laughing can break up with something heavy and painful. And live on.

Speaking of life. Russia has a centuries-old tradition of performances in favour of the needy. Some of the money collected goes to those who need support. This noble mission brings together theatre and viewers at a new level. Such performances are rather rare in the poster, and the feeling is pleasant. You enjoy it, and you know you helped people. One of Moscow’s most fashionable and modern theatres, the Theatre of the United Nations, provided the main stage for Ruslan Malikov’s play «Arkamim». The project was set up with the support of Dementia.net and the fees will go to the project’s clients. The documentary play by Xenia Adamovich on dementia was based on the author ' s personal experience and the stories of those who faced the dementia of loved ones. The subject is complicated, but the play isn’t scary, philosophical. It’s got a lot of humor, unexpected plot twists, and great acting. I want to see it again when I see it.
