«Garage Sail»: Petersburg Residents Choose to Give Things a Second Life
From October 9th to 11th in St. Petersburg, the monthly city fair «Garage Sail» took place in the main building of the Sevkabel Port space—a social event founded on the principles of conscious consumption, decluttering, and reselling. The fair was open daily from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
«The main rule—nothing new.»—this is the slogan promoted by the event organizers on their Instagram page (the social network belongs to Meta, which is recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation). Once again, dozens of different booths featuring stylish, unique items that were looking for a new home and deserved a second life were presented at the fair. According to the organizers, the news of the fair garnered responses from about 120 «sailors.» Clothing of every style, accessories, a vast assortment of vinyl records and CDs, vintage cameras, LEGO sets, and even dishes—all of this was available for visitors at Garage Sail last weekend.
«I travel to different countries and collect various items from Asia, Serbia, and Georgia. At some point, my wardrobe became overflowing, and Garage was a solution to sell things and buy new ones, ” shared a stylist who sells items from her consignment boutique, „Garage Company, ” at Garage Sail.
Garage Sail regularly gathers not only creative people who love experimenting with looks but also pragmatists looking for the most convenient way to sell forgotten belongings. The owner of the station featuring vintage cameras and photography commented on the event, saying, „It’s easier to show the merchandise and sell it faster here than through online stores or websites. There you have to correspond, explain, then pack, ship, and worry that the customer won’t like it…“
Based on observations from visitors to Garage Sail, the most expensive item available at the fair this past weekend was an original vintage Balenciaga bag, priced at 30,000 ₽. Conversely, the lowest-priced item this time was 50 ₽—the cost of postcards and stickers.
The vintage American clothing store booth, «West Hand,» in the Garage Sail attracted significant attention from the teenage audience. Over three days, it gathered the largest crowd of stylish teens looking to complete their outfits.
Another regular vendor from the «garage sale» shared his observation that the fair draws significantly more visitors in the summer than in the fall or winter. Nevertheless, he stated that he «continues to come here every season to meet interesting people and resell his own belongings.»
To keep shoppers entertained during their visit, a DJ set featuring a mix of relaxing hip-hop tracks and dynamic house music was played at Garage Sail from Friday to Sunday. Furthermore, to accommodate visitors, the organizers set up a vendor offering snacks and light fare—including drinks, pizza, and pasta from Spaghetti Incident—for relaxation and refueling.
