Concept
My task was to design a patch for the sound installation «Mute Flower» capable of converting ultra-high frequencies into a range audible to the human ear. The patch needed to accept a frequency stream coming from a quartz generator via an Arduino microcontroller and translate these signals into the audible range using mathematical transformations and frequency shifting.

The sound generated by the patch was intended to convey a mood of hopelessness, chilling the listener with its frigidity toward attempts at human connection. Furthermore, it needed to establish the context of a location where this flower might exist in reality—whether that be a field, a garden, or a swamp.

Translating ultrasonic signals into the audible range was achieved using the beating effect. When two high-frequency signals interact, an amplitude oscillation occurs with a frequency equal to the difference between the original frequencies. If this difference frequency falls within the range of human hearing, it is perceived as an audible sound.
