The difference between them is one: Kaufman’s painting is not tragic; re-thinking the world view or leaving life (which for Kunderer is largely synonymous) is like hatching a butterfly from a caterpillar («Death is as beautiful and as easy as leaving a moth’s doll», wrote poet Oleg Grigoriev at the time. This is not said out loud, but even the death of two heroes looks like a change in their status. Or not? That question might have been answered by Karenine, Teresa’s dog, but animals, alas, even in this movie, are unable to speak.
