The Cordonata—a staircase in Rome designed by Michelangelo—leads up to Capitoline Hill. The Cordonata stands as a testament to the centuries of knights, pedestrians, Romans, and foreigners ascending and descending its steps for nearly five hundred years.

The horizontal lines of the steps are like a staff of music; the people are like notes of varying durations: some pause, freezing in place, while others strive upward in a staccato rhythm, overtaking those moving at a steady pace.

The cordonate is presented to the viewer in such a way that one can only be certain about its origin—at the edge of the sidewalk where endless streams of people move toward each other. How high it rises into the sky, how far it extends across—each viewer can imagine it differently.
