In September, in clear Poland, we participated in the Land Art Lab, «Blessed Soil», an event that took place during the third season of the «Folding without Beard» project. For several days, participants explored the space of the estate, familiarizing themselves with the natural context and biography of Lion Tolstoy, in order to create the structures that were written in the landscape and its context. Our team was provided with a limited number of materials, including plywood, ropes, bars, paint and natural materials in the museum. The tools needed for installation were also provided. We had one day to study the territory and biography of Lion Tolstoy, and two days to realize the idea. As a result, we created a land art system that reflects the philosophy of the writer and is directly related to the landscape that once surrounded Tolstoy and his heroes.
Concept
For our installation, a place has been chosen opposite Kalinin meadow, which is important to mention because the main symbol of the cosice is coming from here. Here, Lev Nikolaevich raised grass on an equal footing with the peasants, enjoying great happiness. It is also described in the novel «Anna Karenina» and is of great importance in the life of Tolstoy Levin’s hero as a means of quieting him.
In front of the meadow, the two fields next to the meadow — the rested and no, and the image of the war and the world — were the same. Kosa is also of dual importance; it can be a weapon and a tool. So, on the sculpted field, the braids are facing up, and on the unwrapped field, they’re pointing down, ready to cut off the grass.
All the braids are bound by a thread, red and white, interlocking, as if to say that the two sides are connected by the substance of this world. There’s a path between the sides along which a man walks, a doer. It is also worth pointing out that the name of the installation is written in one word, because each person singles out, that war is for him and what is peace.
