In today’s information-saturated and visually rich world, meme culture has evolved from a mere phenomenon into a significant cultural and philosophical subject. The HSE GALLERY student project engages with the meme imagery of contemporary reality, presenting a multilayered environment of interpretation, examining the nature of borrowing, mutation, and metamorphosis.
Memes function as unique units of cultural information that are transmitted from person to person across various internet platforms and media formats. This makes them vital tools for understanding the social and cultural shifts occurring around us. Memes are not trivial or simple images; they are dynamic, context-dependent objects that connect us to current events and relevant cultural trends. Like caterpillars transforming into beautiful butterflies, memes undergo a complex metamorphosis, acquiring new forms and meanings depending on the context and the period of their existence. Memes have become a kind of new visual language that develops its own rules and grammar, forming intricate narratives.

The ability to comment on and decode the current cultural and political context—using humor and irony through image and text—is one of the vital aspects of meme culture. By laughing at the absurdity of modernity, we can open our eyes to its tragedy.
