«A very important spot for me on Marshal Baghramyan Street is the bookstore Common Ground. You can sit there and drink coffee, or you can buy a book. On a clear day, you can read a book while looking out at Mount Ararat.»
Igor Gurovich
The renowned designer, graphic artist, and poster master, Igor Gurovich, a faculty member at HSE Art and Design School, has expanded his spectrum of artistic expression. For this artist, who has recently resided in Armenia, rugs have become a new medium.
The selection of a new medium for Gurovich was partly dictated by geographical conditions: the traditions of Armenian carpet weaving date back to the 5th century CE. Furthermore, Armenia is a country where numerous cultures coexist organically, creating cultural intersections—which, in Gurovich’s opinion, offer a wonderful impetus for authorial reflection. It could be argued that by working with a new form of embodying ideas, the artist is experimenting both with the reinterpretation of ancient tradition and with multicultural elements.
The color palette of the rugs is limited and subdued. This is due not so much to the author’s desire as to quite natural reasons: the yarns used to weave the rugs have a natural dye. Therefore, bright colors—orange, red, yellow, blue, green—are impossible here.
The characters depicted on Gurovich’s rugs always belong to different cultures, different canons, and are embodied in various types of visualization. In the author’s view, one can mix literally everything in a rug because the weaving mechanics themselves smooth out potentially possible internal conflicts, and as a result, the characters exist in some kind of cultural—and even intercultural—dialogue.
