In the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, far from the coast, an oil rig continues to operate, built to extract resources from previously unexplored sections of the oceanic shelf.

As old reserves become depleted, companies are forced to dig deeper, risking disruption to what has remained untouched for millions of years.

Sometimes it’s better not to know what’s beneath the surface.

While drilling a new well, workers uncovered an ancient underground cavity that had been isolated from the outside world for millions of years.
Along with the breed, an unknown life form surfaced.
It resembles neither a plant, nor an animal, nor a fungus.
It is a protomycelial organism—
a distributed system capable of perceiving its environment, adapting to it, and assimilating matter.
Everything becomes part of a unified organism.
The platform is gradually changing. Overgrown algae and alien life forms are appearing. The water spreads the contamination through the compartments, and organic residue becomes material for growth.
On the deck, containers, technical equipment, and traces of recent work remain. Puddles of gasoline spread between them, while enormous algae wrap around the structures, infiltrating the spaces where people were just recently present.
No one knows where the platform ends and the organism begins.
Beyond the visible, something continues to grow…
