The presentation was given at the CREATIVE HUB conference, «Possibility and Bias: Artist and Neural Networks | Comic and Illustration Anti-conference, ” on September 24, 2026. The key points of the talk are presented below. Keywords: publishing, layout design, cover design, book illustration, commercial
This presentation is geared toward beginner and advanced designers interested in exploring the book industry.

We began by discussing the various areas of work on a book for a designer: typesetting, cover design, and illustration. In this context, I elaborated on how the editor guides the book and the specifics of collaboration within the team.
Most often, the typesetter, cover designer, and illustrator do not interact directly. All communication occurs through the editor and rounds of revisions.

Talked more about layout design: the technical specifics of working with typography and publisher requirements. The biggest demand is for simple, multi-page black-and-white text layouts. However, you can often find orders for complex, illustrated publications as well.
