Concept
«Intonational Contour» is a wall-mounted flip calendar that explores the expressive potential of typography through the visualization of human speech intonation. The project is founded on the idea of perceiving the year as a single utterance, where each of the 53 weeks possesses its own rhythm, mood, and intonation. Each calendar strip is accompanied by a short phrase reflecting a specific emotional state or a characteristic moment of the year. The calendar’s graphic system is inspired by seven intonational structures of the Russian language, identified by linguist E. A. Bryzgunova. Characteristic variations in pitch—ascents, descents, pauses, and accents—are interpreted as graphic contours that form the basis of the typographic compositions.
