I prepared this popular science project for a presentation in a physics class at a school in 2025. The project details the history of mobile phones, from the first prototypes to modern smartphones.
Initial experiments
Cellular communication, or a mobile radio network, is a type of mobile radio communication based on a cellular network. Its key feature is that the overall coverage area is divided into cells, which are defined by the coverage zones of individual base stations (BS).

First landline telephone
Alexander Bell invented the first landline telephone, patenting it in 1876. Unlike the modern concept, this telephone was not portable; it required a wired connection and was part of a fixed telephone network. While working on the «musical telegraph,» Bell and his assistant Thomas Watson accidentally discovered that sound vibrations could be transmitted through a wire using electromagnetic induction—this discovery formed the basis of the telephone. The first successful demonstration took place on March 10, 1876, and Bell received the patent for the invention on March 7, 1876.

The first mobile phone
1973
Dr. Martin Cooper invented the first cell phone and made the first call. The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was the first mobile phone. It weighed over 1 kg, had a battery life of 35 minutes, and required about 10 hours of charging.

1983
The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X becomes the first commercially available cellular phone.
It was a true triumph. At the time, phones in cars weighed 14 kilograms. Their ability to fit everything necessary into 1 kg was a massive breakthrough.

Design
Design has evolved from T9 keypads to modern touchscreen smartphones.
Currently, cellular communication is the most prevalent form of mobile connectivity. Because of this, mobile phones are specifically referred to as «cellular,» even though other devices—such as satellite phones, radio phones, DECT phones, and certain IP phone models—are also considered «mobile» (meaning portable).
Interesting Facts
The first «Merry Christmas» message was sent in 1992.
Mobile devices are currently used by over 5 billion users.
Approximately 1 billion new devices are released every year.
Communication has evolved rapidly for over a century. This has impacted education, communication, science and technology, and revolutionized the world of connectivity and information transfer. In the future, new technologies await us—technologies we can see emerging right now. The telephone has traveled a long way to become what it is today.
