The Wild Swans
✦ Illustrated bookConceptThis project is a series of illustrations inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Wild Swans. The illustrations explore the story’s atmosphere, key moments, and emotional depth, translating its themes of love, sacrifice, and perseverance into a visual narrative. Through composition, colour, and character design, the project offers a personal interpretation of the classic tale.
Developing a Visual SystemThe aim was to go beyond traditional book illustrations and develop a distinctive visual interpretation of the fairy tale. This led to the idea of presenting the story as a theatrical performance, where the characters become actors on stage and each scene unfolds like a carefully composed production.Special attention was given to stage design, costumes, and decorative elements, which help establish the atmosphere of the story and reflect the personalities of its characters. By combining theatrical aesthetics with illustration, the project creates a cohesive visual language that brings Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale to life in a new and imaginative way.
Final ProductAs a result, an illustrated book based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Wild Swans was developed, designed, and printed. The final product brings together the illustrations, theatrical visual concept, stage sets, and character costumes into a cohesive visual narrative.
KHOKHLOMKA
✦ Illustrated art objectConceptThe KHOKHLOMKA project is a series of eight illustrations reimagining iconic Nizhny Novgorod landmarks through a contemporary interpretation of Khokhloma painting. Architecture and nature merge into a fantastical ornamental world where buildings bloom with intricate leaves and flowers.
Developing the ConceptI wanted to create something distinctive by reinterpreting the traditional Khokhloma painting style in a contemporary way. I explored its characteristic patterns, colours, and decorative elements, transforming them into a new visual language. By combining traditional ornamentation with the architecture and natural landscapes of Nizhny Novgorod, I developed a concept that connects cultural heritage with a fresh, imaginative perspective.In addition, the project was expanded with a range of visual applications, including a wooden cube construction set. This colourful and creative home accessory brings the Khokhloma-inspired patterns into everyday life. The cubes can be arranged in different ways, allowing users to create unique compositions and explore the design through play.
The project was also presented as part of an exhibition in St. Petersburg, where it took part in the exhibition «Ne Khukhry-Mukhry Tut».
This experience allowed the project to be showcased to a wider audience and presented the contemporary interpretation of Khokhloma painting in an exhibition context.
Blooming Laboratory
✦ Illustrated alphabetConceptAn illustrated alphabet in which botanical lab assistants, the guardians of a flourishing garden, care for plants, observe their growth, document changes, and conduct experiments. Each living organism serves as a visual representation of a specific word, with the corresponding letter integrated into its structure.
Developing a Visual SystemDuring the creative process, I wanted to create something chaotic and overflowing with details. This approach shaped the final result, where the characters inhabit their own laboratory world, filled with plants, experiments, and unexpected discoveries. The abundance of elements creates a lively, intricate environment that reflects the imaginative nature of the project.
Final ProductAt the final stage of the project, I also developed various applications of the visual concept across different formats. One of these was a series of lampshades featuring the project’s illustrations, extending the visual identity into functional interior objects.
