The screening of Sergei Bondarchuk was a bold act by a mature filmmaker who entered a creative debate with Hollywood director King Widor (his film version of Tolstoy’s novel appeared on the world screen in 1956). Plus, of course, it was a grand gesture by an artist who decided to embrace an incredible one by filming a film version of almost the main Russian novel of the 19th century (and playing a role in it).
