Concept
Soviet rugs have always simultaneously fascinated and unsettled me with their intricate ornamentation and strange sense of hidden depth. I became interested in merging this motif with the aesthetic of the Backrooms—liminal spaces that evoke a feeling of inexplicable anxiety and recognition—in an illustration. In this piece, the familiar symbol of domestic comfort, nostalgia, and collective memory transforms into a portal to an endless, alien space where the ornament gradually becomes architecture. I wanted to realize this illustration in an actual rug-tapestry to amplify the contrast between a physically tangible, familiar object and the spatial anomaly depicted upon it. In the finished tapestry, the Soviet rug becomes a kind of door into a liminal space, blurring the boundary between reality and imagination.
