CONCEPT

Wirbel Frei is a gastro and community space that merges two independent formats: the Wirbel restaurant and the Frei anti-cafe. The concept is built around the ideas of Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser—a rejection of straight lines, organic forms, rich color, mosaic, and architecture in harmony with nature. The name reflects the very philosophy of the space: Wirbel («vortex») represents energy, gastronomy, and movement, while Frei («freedom») signifies conversation, creativity, and unrestricted time. The space creates a unified ecosystem where the restaurant and anti-cafe operate independently but amplify one another through a shared aesthetic, culture, and atmosphere.

WIRBEL RESTAURANT

Entrance area and restroom
Wirbel — an Austrian cuisine and beer restaurant inspired by the gastronomic culture of Austria and the artistic legacy of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who was himself Austrian. The menu features traditional Central European cuisine and beer culture: meat dishes, schnitzel, seasonal produce, and a wide selection of beer. The brewery was chosen as its location because one of Hundertwasser’s later projects was the Kuchlbauer Tower—an artistic complex and tower for the Kuchlbauer brewery in Bavaria, envisioned as a «world of beer and art.»
ANTICAFFE FREI
Frei is a space for leisure and socializing within Wirbel Frei. Guests come to work, read, meet up, host small events, or simply enjoy a comfortable environment.
