About the Material
The book serves as an archive of invitations to Maison Martin Margiela shows from 1989 to 2014. The invitation is treated as a standalone object intrinsically linked to the history and development of the house. Through its form, material, and design, one can trace the evolution of Maison Martin Margiela’s visual language.
Structure
The material is divided into three chapters.
Chapter I. 1989–2009 Invitations from the period of Martin Margiela’s tenure as the creative director of the house. The material is organized chronologically and segmented by SS and FW seasons.
Chapter II. 2009–2014 Invitations from the period following Martin Margiela’s departure, when the collections were created by an anonymous team of house designers. The material maintains the chronological structure of the first chapter.
Chapter III. Archival Descriptions A text block detailing the characteristics of each invitation. For every item, the date, season, format, material, composition, and other verified information are provided. When an image is unavailable, a documented description is used.
The guiding principle of this publication is not to interpret the invitations, but to record them as material evidence of Maison Martin Margiela’s history.
