ABOUT THE PROJECT

CONCEPT In childhood, my grandmother used to invent fairy tales for me and my sisters. In this project, I decided to use a fairy tale dedicated to me—a way to thank her for being the first person who noticed my love for drawing, which is evident in the theme of the tale. This story is called «The Magic Pencils.» It describes a short story about a little girl who meets magical pencils that help her draw a gift for her grandmother. The girl resolves the pencils' dispute over which one is more important by using every color in her drawing. This simple and kind story can teach children to appreciate the uniqueness of each thing and strive for collaboration and creative development.
VISUAL CONCEPT AND FORMAT
For this project, a compact format of 165 × 220 mm was selected.
Inner block volume: 16 panels.
Cover: 4 panels.
The illustrations are done in digital format, styled after children’s drawings, mimicking pencil strokes as if made by an uncertain child’s hand. Some background elements imitate watercolor smudges, which is also a reference to simple children’s watercolor sets.
TARGET AUDIENCE (3+)
The fairy tale was originally written for a 4-year-old girl, and the main character is her contemporary. Consequently, the core target audience is girls aged 3 to 6. However, the book will also appeal to boys of preschool age, as the theme of drawing is gender-neutral.
