Filigree translates from French à jour as «to light» or «to reveal.»

The heyday of lacemaking occurred in 19th-century Europe, where delicate, crocheted doilies became a popular element of bourgeois interior design. In the USSR, this art form became accessible and an integral part of interior decor. Despite the exquisite, fine craftsmanship of lacy patterns today, interest in this direction has waned—doilies are now associated with an outdated «grandmotherly» style.
