An original interpretation of the abyss through the personal perception of human suffering
Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy portrays Hell as a space where human sins, actions, and vices take physical form. Each circle of Hell possesses its own laws, imagery, and modes of existence. Dante’s Hell becomes the material embodiment of what a person committed during their lifetime. In the project «World of Pain, ” I engage with this concept, but I approach it from a different angle. What if Hell is defined not only by a person’s actions but also by how they perceive their own existence?I am creating my own world where pain forms the foundation of the surrounding reality. It manifests not only in living beings but also in nature, architecture, the sky, and the earth itself. The space seems to undergo the same suffering as its inhabitants.A red sky, a black sun, bone-like trees, interwoven veins, and surfaces resembling human flesh form a unified environment where the boundary between living organisms and the surrounding world gradually dissolves. If Dante describes a journey through Hell, my project attempts to visualize my own perception of that space, freeing it from the need to adhere to a canon.

Connection to Dante’s work
I. Hell as a Separate World
In Dante, hell possesses its own structure, laws, and spatial logic. It is not merely a place where suffering people reside, but an entire system of existence. In «The World of Pain,» I develop this idea by creating an autonomous visual universe. Its nature, objects, and landscapes exist according to their own rules, dictated by the theme of suffering.
II. The Physical Embodiment of an Inner State
In Dante’s poem, the punishments inflicted upon sinners are linked to their actions and the nature of the sins committed. Abstract moral categories take on a concrete form. In my project, this principle is reinterpreted: pain ceases to be exclusively an internal human experience and instead becomes a quality of the surrounding environment. The earth resembles flesh, trees transform into skeletal structures, and veins permeate the space like roots. The world appears as a single organism experiencing continuous suffering.
III. Journey as Encounter with the Unknown
Dante traverses hell, gradually revealing new spaces and confronting various forms of human suffering. My project offers the viewer a journey into an unknown world. Each illustration unveils a distinct fragment of reality, allowing for a gradual comprehension of its structure. However, I do not copy the circles of hell or categorize images by specific sins. Instead, I create my own system of imagery, unified by a shared atmosphere and aesthetic.

Main concept: the world as an organism experiencing pain
The central idea of the project is that pain no longer belongs exclusively to the human being. It extends to the entire surrounding space. As a result, it creates a world where the human body and the environment no longer exist separately from each other. The person is not simply in hell; the world itself becomes a physical expression of pain. This is where my project’s main conceptual difference from Dante’s work lies. If Dante’s architecture of hell is tied to divine justice, moral order, and the consequences of human actions, in the «World of Pain, ” I explore the very possibility of a space where suffering defines reality.
Why Dante?
Addressing «The Divine Comedy» allows me to situate my project within the context of one of the most famous artistic representations of hell.
However, my objective is not to illustrate the epic or reproduce its imagery.
I am using Dante’s work as a conceptual starting point to approach a familiar theme from my own artistic perspective.
This is a dialogue between the classic conception of hell and a modern, authorial interpretation where traditional religious iconography yields to organic, surreal, and corporeal forms.
This familiar concept provides the audience with an entry point into the project, while the author’s visual system offers them an entirely different reading.
