Ubrus mirror — image of a married woman

Ubrus mirror, March 2024; dimensions: 410×18×550mm, weight: 1950g, material: ash. Finishing — acrylic matt varnish. The mirror frame is made on a milling machine.
Concept and function
The shape of the mirror frame repeats the silhouette of a married woman’s headdress — ubrus. Ubrus from Old Slavonic means a shawl, a cloth. It was tied on top of a povoynik, so that a married woman’s hair was completely hidden from prying eyes. The rounded upper part of the mirror frame is the outline of a woman’s head, covered with a specially tied ubrus with rigid folds along the edges just above the temples. The ubrus tightly encircled the povoynik. The author repeated this geometry in the frame of the mirror. Usually, the ubrus was not knotted, but pinned under the chin and the shawl laid richly on a woman’s shoulders. The decor of the mirror frame is made according to the motifs of painting of peasant houses in Altai and is located in one strip in the lower part of the mirror frame. The ornament has a symmetrical composition, referring to folk tradition. The shape of the mirror and the ornamental solution convey the image of a married woman, full of inner dignity and confidence, status and mystery.
