Concept
This publication is a guide to the butterflies of the Leningrad Region, featuring images of males and females from both the dorsal and ventral sides of the wings, allowing identification regardless of the insect’s orientation in space. A color index accelerates searching by dominant coloration. Each photograph includes a full-scale measuring ruler. For every species, a description is provided: family, diagnostic characteristics, range, habitat, larval host plants, life cycle, variability, conservation status, and agricultural significance.
Cover
The cover displays the color scales of all butterflies described in the book. The scale of each wing shade is proportional to its share in the overall coloring of that specific species. The butterfly names and page numbers are overlaid onto the color fields.
