Concept
«The Blue Bird Offstage» is a series of six small sculptures hidden throughout central Moscow near locations connected to the Moscow Art Theatre.
My aim was to prevent them from looking like monuments. On the contrary—I wanted to create the feeling that the characters from «The Blue Bird» once stepped out of the theater and continued living nearby. Someone might have found a spot on a parapet, someone might be sitting with books, and someone might be closely examining a randomly found feather.
These pieces can be encountered individually, or you can purposely trace the entire route to find all six together.
This aligns well with the themes of «The Blue Bird» itself: its characters are constantly searching for something, even though the most important things are often much closer than they appear. In this project, the search becomes literal—to see the figurine, you just have to look around more carefully.
Sketches
First, I created very simple, quick sketches. At this stage, the priority was not the appearance of the costumes, but what each character would be doing.
Therefore, each figurine has a small action. Light’s Spirit is holding a lantern. Tiltil is looking through a lens. Mitil is examining a small bird. The dog has found a blue feather. The cat is settled on books, as if they always belonged to her.
The figurines are intentionally somewhat stylized—with rounded shapes, simple faces, and doll-like proportions. This allows them to function better as small, urban characters rather than as miniature monuments.

Characters
Soul of Light
In the play, the Soul of Light accompanies the children on their journey. It is one of the kindest figures in the story—it helps, supports, and guides them forward. In the project materials, it is described as a symbol of light, hope, and the possibility of seeing the hidden. Therefore, its figure is the first to meet the person on the route. She is seated with a small lantern in her hands. The lantern itself is bronze, but the glass inside is blue. It should not shine very brightly—rather, it should subtly stand out, like a small beacon.LegendThe Soul of Light appeared at the theater before the others.Legend has it that in the evening, when the performance ends and the audience disperses onto Kamgermersky Street, she sits with the lantern near the entrance for some time. She feels that someone will inevitably linger and won’t immediately know where to go next. That is why she never extinguishes the light first. And the blue glow in her lantern shows the direction to the next figure.LocationMHCKh ChekhovThis is the start of the route, so this is where the guiding character appears.
Mitil
Mitil is Tiltil’s younger sister. She is curious, open, and much calmer than her brother.
I wanted her to look not like just another «seeker,» but like someone who knows how to pause and carefully examine what is already close at hand.
That is why Mitil is holding a small, blue bird, resembling one folded from paper.
Legend
One day, Mitil saw a scrap of blue paper near the theater.
She folded it into a bird and decided that the Blue Bird could look exactly like this—small, simple, and completely unlike the miracle everyone expects to see.
Since then, she has been sitting near the theater, contemplating her find.
Sometimes the blue bird in her hands glitters slightly in the sun, and then it seems as if it is about to unfold and fly away.
Location
Kamgermersky Lane
Mitil is no longer at the main theater entrance, but a little further on. From this point, the transition from the theater to the city begins.
Tiltil
Tilting — the chief seeker in history. In the hero’s description, he is kind, resolute, brave, and ready to take action. The materials directly call him a «seeker.»In my version, he acquired a small lens with blue glass. This is not an object from the play, but rather his personal habit: Tilting constantly tries to view the world with a little more attention. He sits, leaning slightly forward, as if he has just noticed something very small.LegendTilting is convinced that the Blue Bird is extremely good at hiding. After long searches, he concluded that the problem isn’t that it doesn’t exist, but that people look too quickly. Therefore, he now has the blue lens.Through it, he checks cracks in walls, leaves, windows, signs, and even passersby’s pockets. He still hasn’t found the Blue Bird itself, but he constantly discovers things that no one had noticed before.Sometimes he deliberately leaves the lens aimed toward the next point on his route.LocationThe K. S. Stanislavski MuseumI appreciate that here Tilting remains precisely an observer and a seeker, rather than just a character illustration.
Blue Bird
The Bluebird is the only figurine that becomes almost entirely blue.
In the play, it constantly slips away. You can’t just find it once and keep it—which is why I didn’t want to depict it sitting calmly.
The pose remains stable so that the sculpture can genuinely be placed on a surface, but the wings, tail, and turn of the body create the impression that the bird has only paused here for a few seconds.
Legend
No one knows exactly how long it has been here.
Some say the bird only arrives in the mornings. Others are certain it changes location every night.
But most often, it is noticed near the Nemirovich-Danchenko residence.
Perhaps it simply likes to return to where another Bluebird already lives—a small bird in a music box. Such a music box with a cage is indeed kept in the Nemirovich-Danchenko apartment.
But the city bird in a cage isn’t planning on staying put.
It stopped for literally a minute and is already ready to fly on.

Of all six locations, the connection between the character and the place is the most direct here.
Dog
Dog—one of the warmest characters in «The Blue Bird.» He is loyal, honest, a little impulsive, and always ready to protect the children. In the materials, he is described as a symbol of faithfulness and reliability. Therefore, I did not want to give him an overly complex prop or a too-theatrical pose.He is simply sitting, with one front paw raised. A small blue feather rests on it, and the Dog is examining it very closely. The LegendThe Dog is certain he has finally tracked her.In the morning, he found a blue feather on the ground and has been afraid to lose it ever since. At first, he wanted to immediately run after the bird, but then he decided to wait for Tiltyl. And so he sits. The feather rests on his raised paw, and the Dog occasionally glances at it, then looks around—wondering if the bird will return. He is the only one in the entire company who is completely sure: if there is a feather, then the Blue Bird must be somewhere nearby.LocationM. Gorky Museum of Fine ArtsOn the route, the Dog appears after the bird itself. This means the viewer saw her before him, and he has only found a trace so far.
Cat
The Cat is quite different.
She is cunning, capricious, and above all, thinks about her own interests. Therefore, I did not want to make her as energetic as the others.
While everyone else is going somewhere and searching for something, the Cat has already settled into a comfortable spot.
She is sitting on a stack of books, eyes closed, with her tail wrapped around the base. She has a small blue locket around her neck, and a blue bookmark is visible between the pages of one of the books.
Legend
The Cat claims she isn’t looking for anyone at all.
She supposedly found the books by chance. The blue bookmark was already inside. Someone gave her the locket. And if anyone asks where the Blue Bird color comes from, the Cat will pretend she didn’t hear them.
In reality, she knows much more about the route than everyone else.
She just isn’t planning on telling.
Sometimes it seems as if she is deliberately sitting with her eyes closed so that passersby think she is asleep. But as soon as you move a few steps away—the locket is turned completely in a different direction.
Location
Tverskoy Boulevard
The Cat finishes the route and looks more like a character who has lived in the city for a long time and has no intention of leaving than anyone else.
Route
Route Map
I wanted the route to function not just as a map featuring six objects, but as a small narrative.First, The Soul of Light shows the way. Then, Mitil finds her little bird. Tiltil continues searching. The real Blue Bird appears further along the path and then vanishes again. The Dog only discovers a feather left behind. And at the very end, the Cat sits with a blue medallion, clearly knowing something the viewer does not. This creates a very simple storyline between the sculptures, even without reading the lengthy descriptions. Moreover, each figurine can be encountered incidentally. They are small and do not require a separate pedestal—rather, they occupy existing spaces within the city. A person might notice one initially, only to later discover that five more are hidden nearby. And then, the stroll becomes a quest.
