The meaning doesn’t end with the words. Here, calligraphy becomes not just text, but the trace of the hand’s movement through the transparency of tracing paper, the layering of lines, and the fragmentation of writing.
The «After the Word» project explores the space between the word and the meaning. At its core is the idea that language is incapable of fully conveying a person’s internal experience. The work addresses those values and experiences that lie beyond the text.
The process of layering text and semi-transparent materials creates an effect of coexisting layers of meaning, none of which is definitive.
The bottom layer represents the initial impression. The middle layer contains the main text—the compositional and semantic core of the work and its most readable part. The top layer is a layer of hidden meaning and visual noise. The scribbles complicate reading and demonstrate that there is always more behind the words than the text itself.
Words, when spoken aloud, are immediately distorted by the circumstances in which they are spoken. They do not express what we mean. Yet it is only by words that we can make known our thoughts to one another. Virginia Woolf
