Tailor—a specialist who creates a garment from the first fitting to the final piece.
Unlike a seamstress, the tailor covers the entire production cycle: taking measurements, working with patterns, cutting the fabric, assembling the garment, and fitting it to a specific figure.
A tailor typically works in small sewing laboratories or bespoke ateliers—environments where mass production gives way to client relationships. However, even when a brand creates clothing in large quantities, the initial design—the sample—is developed by a specialist with tailoring expertise. On the production line, every unit of the finished clothing batch sewn by the seamstresses is compared against this master sample.
In bespoke tailoring, the tailor must be able to interpret the nuances of a client’s figure, adjusting the patterns and fit accordingly, and possess deep knowledge of working with various fabrics and technologies. Tailoring qualification does not inherently imply pattern construction skills; nevertheless, in practice, a tailor in an atelier often assumes this role, modifying and modeling existing pattern bases to suit individual orders.
