The project investigates the mechanism of transforming the individual into the collective. A photorobot, an instrument of forensic identification, is used here in reverse. Instead of collecting a face for recognition, it anonymizes it, converting unique features into a set of common characteristics that could belong to anyone.
Real people with recognizable faces become mere elements in a photographic collage and lose their uniqueness. Their individual opinions and convictions become statistically negligible. However, when gathered together, they acquire weight. The mass of erased, depersonalized carriers of a single belief becomes a tool for shaping society. The individual person matters little—only the quantity counts.
The project is titled «Unit of Measurement» because one person holds no weight compared to mass. Individuality vanishes not when it is erased, but when it consents to be erased—when it chooses the safety of the majority over the solitude of its own voice. This essay is about the aging of the self, about how thought becomes worn down, yielding to a collective mold, and how repetition transforms any absurdity into the norm.
